[Link]- “How We Got To 40,310 Facebook Fans In 4 Days”

Posted on July 19, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

Popular Facebook blog All Facebook posted this article last month about how one business received more than 40,000 new fans in only 4 days! It’s pretty impressive, if you ask me. The tactics in the article could work for you, but there are some differences between campaigns of this nature and local-targeted campaigns.

The cool thing is that this article give you some ideas into the Facebook Ads system and some pretty cool “tricks” you can use to promote your fan pages.

At JuggleMedia, we help businesses around the Wichita, Kansas area (as well as Colorado) use social media to increase sales through positive connections and interactions with consumers on web-based channels. We get involved in the process and move it along, encouraging businesses to leap into the space, not “test it out.”

Thanks to Michael Shead over at DryPixel.com for the link. Good work buddy!

[Success!]- Home-Maid rocks social media- phone rings!

Posted on June 30, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

It’s very easy to find how big businesses across the country are “doing” social media “well.” I personally find some of these stories interesting but usually get to the “how much did THAT cost” question quickly. Local businesses here in Wichita don’t have millions to spend on a huge social media campaign with tons of custom applications, pages and the things that Ford is implementing. What they do have is an incredible product or service and a little help from JuggleMedia.

I usually don’t like to talk about my clients because I like to be all secretive and let them bask in their social media successes. Home-Maid, however, is one client that I am particularly fond of as the success we’ve had in a short amount of time has really produced some measurable results. It’s local, measurable and successful. Allow me to share that success with you. (You may learn something.)

Increase in Fan Numbers

I KNOW IT’S NOT ABOUT QUANTITY (or is it?)

Home-Maid entered into a little contest after she hired JuggleMedia with a local business to see who can get more fans by July 1 (tomorrow, Glup!).

“You did what?” I asked?

“Yeah! We’re gonna win, right?” She replied.

“You bet. How much we are going to sleep is another story.”

Initially, I was rather bummed at this contest idea. You see, I want people to get QUALITY fans associated to their page, not a massive QUANTITY. What good is it to have a thousand fans if the phone doesn’t ring? I feel a lot of people miss this very important aspect in their social media marketing. Why are you here?

So Home-Maid and I ventured out on an interesting journey. Initially, we contacted people in Wichita that were tied to a ton of people and asked them to suggest the Home-Maid page to their friends. After a few weird looks and me simply not feeling comfortable with it, we changed our strategy. We had to do this the old fashioned way: Hard Work.

So I encouraged Home-Maid to start with their current clients and using the Facebook Page as a common meeting place, tell others why they love Home-Maid so much. We then used her traditional advertising to inform people about the page and why they should join it. Finally, we came up with a contest to give people that extra push to like the page. (If you haven’t already done so, like Home-Maid for a chance to win a FREE house cleaning!)

Phone Rings!

The contest aside, it is incredibly important to give your fans a reason to like the page and CALL YOU! Why else would they be here. We came up with several Facebook-specific specials for both current and future customers on the site. After a few posts, the phone was ringing and we were seeing results specifically linked to her Facebook traffic. That’s short-term success and some measurable initial ROI.

Key Demos Close- Room for Growth!

In our strategy, we really wanted our fan growth in our key demographics for Home-Maid’s clients. While the graphic on the right shows that we did increase our number, we do still have room for growth in our key demographics of 35-44 Females and 45-54 Females. The current statistics are pretty similar to what a “normal” Facebook Page has, with slightly more women than traditional pages.

Success?

We view this campaign a success for three reasons. First, we now have a larger audience to communicate our messages about the greatness of Home-Maid. We have created a brand-representative Facebook Page and also instilled the type of communication we are going to be offering on the page (we tried to really keep the “We’re awesome, love-us stuff down) while also giving her customers a place to praise or list concerns. A true page for two-way communication with her audience. Finally, we have an opportunity to grow and continue to get more and better fans for her page.

So if you haven’t already liked Home-Maid’s Facebook Page, please do so. While you’re at it, like ours.

Have a great one!

Ryan

Facebook’s Privacy 101

Posted on May 24, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

Depending on who you are, or where you are, or better yet, how much time you spend online, you may have heard about this little company called Facebook and some decisions they have made in the past couple of weeks. While it is incredibly important for you to know what is happening with your information, I also know that you don’t have hours a day to read all the news stories and articles about the most recent issues. Here’s a short list and a lot of what you need to know.

1. The privacy of your Facebook account is ultimately  YOUR responsibility!

Last week I did a screen cast of the Facebook Privacy settings tab. I believe it is ultimately your responsibility to open up your information to others if you want to. If not, there are ways to lock it down Fort Knox style. Click here to view the cast.

Facebook mimics this sentiment (or I mimic them) in their Privacy Policy:

“Privacy is built around a few key ideas: You should have control over what you share. It should be easy to find and connect with friends. Your privacy settings should be simple and easy to understand.”

Keyword: SHOULD, as in it’s up to you! You SHOULD be able to share as much or as little as you’d like. You SHOULD be able to connect to your friends or not show up on the radar screen. You SHOULD be able to understand this stuff…. soon.

2. Facebook is growing. Fast

This time last year, Facebook wasn’t even half as large as it is now (200 Million user April 2009 to almost 500 million users today.) If it were a country, Facebook would be the third largest on the PLANET. That’s a lot of people. The problem is that we are still dealing with a human-computer interface. As the network grows, so does the server technology, demand, coding and a bunch of other stuff you and I can’t understand. Facebook, is growing and trying very hard to keep your information safe.

3. Facebook has your best interest in mind

CEO Mark Zukerberg

This weekend, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote tech blogger Robert Scoble an email stating:

“I know we’ve made a bunch of mistakes, but my hope at the end of this is that the service ends up in a better place and that people understand that our intentions are in the right place, and we respond to the feedback from the people we serve.”

And followed-up today by releasing this in the Washington Post:

“There needs to be a simpler way to control your information,” he wrote. “In the coming weeks, we will add privacy controls that are much simpler to use. We will also give you an easy way to turn off all third-party services.”

He also went on to list the major importance’s of Facebook:

“– You have control over how your information is shared.

– We do not share your personal information with people or services you don’t want.

– We do not give advertisers access to your personal information.

– We do not and never will sell any of your information to anyone.

– We will always keep Facebook a free service for everyone.”

In summary

I personally believe that Facebook is integrating its way into our everyday lives at the same time attempting to connect individuals. The problem that you have with this kind of “instant” connectivity happening over a short period of time is that some people aren’t that public or don’t want to be that public. They don’t want to live a transparent life.

At JuggleMedia, help our clients live in that transparent world because their customers want it, but when it comes to the personal information, as in the business owner, we discourage sharing of personal information if you don’t actually KNOW a person. The trick is to understand these difficult privacy settings on a personal level to keep your personal life personal, but your professional life professional and do so in the same space.

Right now, Facebook makes it so one must have a computer programming degree to understand, but as Zukerberg said, will be changing later this week.

As always, if you have any questions, shoot me an email to rcole@jugglemedia.com

[UPDATE] Fix to Facebook’s tab problem

Posted on May 19, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

Just a little while ago, we learned that Facebook really messed with the ease of pushing non-page members to the custom landing tabs that some businesses have created.

I found a fix.

If you right click (or hold the “control” key and click) on the custom tab and change all of your inbound links from your website or other locations that to the link to your tab, you should be set.

So instead of making this change easy, Facebook is just trying to make it harder.

For example, instead of going to http://www.facebook.com/jugglemedia, no I’ll point my settings on my site to http://www.facebook.com/JuggleMedia?v=app_4949752878 or the page for my businesses landing tab.

A problem, but one that you can work around. Unfortunately you just have to change all your links.

Huge LOSE for small biz on Facebook

Posted on May 19, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

Today, the awesome folks over at Facebook decided that smaller business pages (those with less than 10,000 fans or don’t place ads) can no longer have the page automatically land on a certain tab.

For example, if you don’t “like” JuggleMedia on Facebook already, the default landing page for http://www.facebook.com/JuggleMedia was my welcome tab. Now, you head straight to the wall without the ability to point people there.

Why does this matter? Well, for one, it means that to some people those wonderful “Welcome” tabs become obsolete and quite frankly unuseful. What’s the point of having them if people don’t see them?

Now, the bright side is that Facebook still lets us have customized tabs, we just can dictate which tab new users can land on. So, if you have a restaurant and have menu tabs, they can still be there and show your menu, you just can’t push new traffic there. Make sense?

To see what the developers are thinking, click the image below:

Let me know if you have any questions on how this may effect your page.

Thanks,

If you build it… no guarantee they’ll come

Posted on May 13, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

If you build a sweet Facebook page (or have us build one for you), it doesn’t necessarily qualify you as a social media marketer. One of the best things about some of these social media platforms is the fact that it lets you know how many people are connected to your particular page. This can also be one of the worst things if you don’t manage it right.

At JuggleMedia, we have worked with clients that are really gung-ho about this “social media thing.” These are the ones that usually invest a little time and energy into their platforms daily and therefore have people that follow their information.

You see, much like the graphic, you are joining a web of people that are already online and using these platforms. Sure, organically you are going to have certain people that “like” your Facebook page or “follow” you on Twitter, but what’s your strategy for getting more “likes?” AH-HA! That was a trick question! The real question is how are you going to use your social platforms to get more customers. “Likes” are good. Customers and money are much, much better.

So here’s the first step (after talking to us of course), build the platforms and thing of ways to connect with people across the social web. For some people this is a very hard thing to thing about. It can take time and dare-I-say money to connect with people. Using tools like Facebook Ads to simply show that you have a page can be very effective but at the same time waste a lot of money if not used appropriately. As of this writing (May 13, 2010 at 11:08- yes the time does matter) there are over 488,000 people on Facebook within 50 miles of Wichita, KS. That number fluctuates hourly as accounts are added and deleted (much more added than deleted) each and every single day.

So I encourage you to think of social media platforms as more of a tool than an objective. You can’t just build a page and think you’ll get thousands of people flocking to it. Actually integrating it into your communications platform can be very beneficial.

Need help? Call us.

Happy social media-ing…whatever that means.

Social success can take time. Use wisely!

Posted on May 12, 2010 in Social Media in Wichita Kansas by JuggleMedia

Yesterday, I was privileged to have a meeting with a client 90-days after we started revamping their Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace pages. That’s a long time in the social media world, but they are very happy about the foundation that we’ve built for their long-term success.

What I want to tell you is that success in social media isn’t an overnight thing. Sure, Conan O’Brien can have a Twitter following of 100,000+ overnight, but his Twitter handle is piggybacking off of his big name, something smaller businesses can’t compete with. That’s okay.

So how does one build a strong foundation? Well, let me give you two freebees. One, you’ve got to have a plan and two, you have to start in the right place. Vague, I know, but really, really important.

At JuggleMedia, we sit down with businesses and create their long-term goals. Why are you using these channels? Which channels are you using? Have you considered “x”? What about “d”? It’s our job to make sure a business owner or communicator doesn’t “stress” about the foundational building process.

The second tip is to start in the right place. Taking a day and saying “I’m just going to join every social media platform out there” is essentially a waste of a perfectly good day. First, you could create the wrong type of page, too many platforms and then you either get shut down by the owner or worse yet, have added 5 hours to your workday. Successful social media communications BLEND within the day, not dominate it.

Look at social media as a long-term component of your communications strategy. If you don’t have a strategy, think about one and write out some goals. We’ll encourage you to do the same.

Call us if you need any help. (316.747.9266) We’ll drop on by.
